Update: we've finally updated the car detail interface! more details here

More is coming. Check out the future todo list.

August 27th

It's been a long time in coming, but we've finally updated the interface for our car detail page! We've also added a graph of your car's driving conditions, as well as the ability to specify the color of your car ("edit car info"). I've got two Accords, and I can't tell you how many times I've added a datapoint to the wrong car....hopefully the color will be one more clue to remind me!

February 6th

We've added the ability for the community to update EPA estimates for new or incorrect model entries. On the model detail page, click on "edit EPA estimates". Your changes are logged, and you can view them in the new "Project Log" report listed on the home page.

Now that w'all've been collecting data for over six months, we can start to look at interesting things. Here's the first interesting chart: Gas Price History

October 15th

Perhaps the hardest part of tracking your mileage is remembering to write it down or keep the receipt? We made a simple log that you can print and keep in your vehicles (pen not included). Click to view and print

October 11th

With the ability to delete datapoints (edit => delete this datapoint), we've gone through and cleaned up the lists and graphs so that they only include the active and valid datapoints.

Thanks to all of you that have offered suggestions and reported problems. info (at) gasaroo (dot) com

For those people that track only odometer and not tripometer, we've added some artificial intelligence (!?) that attempts to calculate your miles since last fillup, if you only enter the odometer reading and gallons. Here's the down and dirty of how it works:

  1. If you did not enter miles, we try to calculate the miles.
  2. We first lookup your *last* odometer reading.
  3. If it exists, we calculate the difference in miles between this fillup and last.
  4. We then calculate the MPG and check it against the EPA standards.
  5. If your calculated MPG is between 0.5 of city estimate and 1.3 of highway estimate, we consider it good (i.e. you didn't miss a fillup in between) and save the calculated miles and MPG. (phew!)
Let us know if you see anything strange and unpredictable happen!

July 27th

We finally added the ability to edit our datapoints (hooray!). Now we (Adam included!) can correct our past mistakes and add information to the past datapoints.

We also added a "Brand" to the fillup datapoints, so we can potentially track the impact of fuel brand on gas mileage. Imagine if we discovered that Shell gas grants a 10% fuel economy boost over Fina! Of course, we'll only know that as we have the data to run that comparison.

July 16th

Maintenance datapoints are here, so we can personally track our maintenance history as well as correlate this with any changes in our fuel economy. We will add the ability to report and track this data more effectively over time. If you have suggestions for doing this, we welcome them with open arms.

July 10th

You can edit your car titles now, and link them to a different model if you chose the wrong engine type, for example. We've also added the ability to add your model, if the project doesn't currently have your model listed.

June 20th

Welcome to gasaroo, day 1. We've started what we imagine will be an amazingly valuable project to build the most comprehensive fuel-economy tracking community available in the world. Big dreams start small, right? :-)

fueleconomy.gov has been kind enough to share their data with us as a starting point. We've added trending and graphing to show real-world mileage against EPA estimates and other cars of the same model. Join the project and start tracking your gas mileage with us.
